June 2014 Edition

Did you know that at one time Winchester was home to a very successful brewery? John Slagle built it in the early 1800’s and operated by his sons, then grandsons, until the 1890’s. The Slagle Brewery was the largest distributor of beer west of the Blue Ridge. The building was destroyed by fire twice. The first time in 1816 but it was soon rebuilt, the second was in 1893. The last time the family did not reopen; instead sold the lot. In 1895 the new owners laid a cornerstone for a building. Can anyone name what now occupies the site? Here’s a hint; it is ironic that the brewery was destroyed by fire.  I will give the answer in next month’s Gaye’s Corner, or you can stop by the bar and I’ll tell you.
